Mount Taranaki / Taranaki Maunga

Mount Taranaki/Taranaki Maunga is a dormant volcano in the Taranaki region.

The mountain is 2,518 metres (8,261 ft).  On the mountains south side is Panitahi/Fanthams Peak which is 1,966 metres (6,450 ft).

There are three roads that lead part way up the mountain, through the surrounding Egmont National Park.

  • East Egmont plateau – Accessed via Pembroke Road, Stratford
  • Dawson Falls Visitor Centre- Accessed via Opunake Road and Manaia Road (Turn off in Stratford)
  • North Egmont Visitor Centre- Accessed via State Highway 3 and Egmont Road (Turn off between Egmont Village and Inglewood)

Within Egmont National Park is network of trails, tracks and huts to explore. Mount Taranaki is accessible to climb, although is it advised to seek professional advice and record your intentions before doing so.
